I’m trying to decide whether to start heating my hot water with oil. I have an oil fired furnace but a propane water heater. I just went through 60 lbs of propane in two weeks which equates to about $30 per week for laundy; showers and dishes. My old place the furnace heated the hot water in the furnace and during the summer I would fill the furnace in say april and not need fuel until oct. Seems lots cheaper than what the propane is costing me. Please comment.

@ Hardebern – It’s really an issue of equipment more than propane or oil in your case. If you use an oil or propane fired boiler for heat and hot water it will ALWAYS be more efficient than a stand alone water heater. If you compare apples to apples with the equipment you will find very little difference. Best of luck!

I would seriously look into geothermal. N.H. can have a very cold environment but underground temps will still be a constant tempature (depending on how deep you go) well above freezing (closer to 50 or 60 degrees F.)
